Get Rid of Clutter Before Moving Home

For most of us, the prospect of moving is both an exciting and an intimidating one. While it’s always great fun to change our surroundings, we all know it can be hard work to uproot ourselves, our families and our belongings from one location to another. Because of the very nature of the task, it really does pay to be as organised as possible, and to try to remain calm under all the pressure.

Whether you live in a cosy apartment or a large family house, you will no doubt have accumulated a sizable amount of possessions during the time you’ve lived there. And if you have been in the same property for a number of years, the chances are you will have a vast amount of belongings that you may not even need. And while they’re not doing you any harm in the basement or attic, when the time comes to move home you have to ask yourself whether you really need them now.

One of the most common sources of clutter is items relating to children that have now grown up and left home. We’ve all kept old school reports, finger paintings, favorite items of clothing and even old toys, but when you’re about to move home you have to question whether you really need all of them anymore. It goes without saying that disposing of personal items such as photographs and school certificates isn’t a good idea, but you have to be a little ruthless with other things.

Many people collected items in their younger days, and even though they’ve given up the hobby many years ago they have retained their collections. The attics and basements of the world are full of things such as stamps, old newspapers, sports magazines, coins, porcelain figurines and model trains. Before you move, you should think about whether you intend to keep them, and if you don’t you should consider disposal.

Some collections are worth a substantial amount of money, so there’s absolutely no point in throwing them away. In previous years, you may have taken them to a local auctioneer with a view to selling, but now we have sites such as eBay which are perfect for the job, and can find you a buyer in no time. Millions of people scour the web every day looking for specialized items, so it’s no wonder so many of us choose to sell this way.

Needless to say, you may be one of those people who prefer to hang on to everything, and if that’s the case then so be it. But if you’re looking to make the move as stress-free as possible, a little de-clutter in advance can make all the difference.
